Belize Government to Assume Control of BTL
http://www.governmentofbelize.gov.bz/press_release_details.php?pr_id=5613Apparently, the #belize house passed a bill today to assume control of BTL, the country’s internet and telephone monopoly. BTL has been extremely anticompetitive and using their monopoly to the detriment of the progress of Belize and it’s citizens.
I’m not happy that it has to come to this. I’d prefer to see the government take steps to induce competition. I sincerely hope that this is a temporary measure until a better course of action can be figured out.
Pepsi Throwback / Mountain Dew Throwback get 8 week trial
http://www.dvorak.org/blog/2009/04/30/pepsi-offers-high-fructose-corn-syrup-f...High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is the devil. Pepsi is hopping on the anti-HFCS bandwagon by offering a real sugar versions of Pepsi and Mountain Dew. Soft drinks always taste better in other countries. Our government apparently likes it that way because they tax the hell out of sugar imports. In Belize, they use locally grown cane sugar in their soft drinks and they taste better than anything you can get here.
I really wish I wasn’t on a diet right now. Kudos to Pepsi and I hope they continue this long past the 8 week trial.
Wings up in smoke...
http://sanpedrosun.net/08-062.htmlThe only department store on the island of Ambergris Caye burned down yesterday and today. It doesn’t sound like anyone was hurt, but a big loss to a small island.
SAN PEDRO POLICE SEIZE PACKAGED WEED
(not sure why I found this story from Belize so funny)
San Pedro Police on Thursday visited the Maya Island Air Cargo Office where they examined three suspicious looking and smelling parcels which had arrived by plane. Upon examination, Police found that the parcels all contained a quantity of compressed marijuana weighing a total of 7,350 grams. The controlled substance was labeled and transported to the San Pedro Police Station where it awaits destruction or identification by rightful owner.
