A bit of awesome news

I just wanted to share with everyone that I’m actually going to be a dad.

It’s a little hard for me to believe that it’s true, but the doctor claims it to be the case… and who am I to argue with the person waving the magic ultrasound wand.

Provided everything progresses normally, we should be celebrating a birthday around the first of August.

Someone really has it in for the new Animal Hospital

From Pedro at the AmbergrisVacations forums:

“I was in Ivo’s new coffee shop when I got a call from Laurie Jackson (my asst. manager) who said there were the police/immigration/customs personnel at the gate with a search warrant issued in SP of todays date, and I better come back immediately.
When I got back there was Laurie(the vet) with the immigration officer, who had not waited for me,investigating all her paperwork which he ruled was a 100% correct.I asked him if it had not been correct what would have happened and he said she probably would have been taken into custody.
The customs and the police went to my bar examined every bottle, then to the liquor store room, and then into my house-they found nothing illegal, and by this time they were apologising as they had been told to come by various luminaries on a charity board, who had been making lots of calls to the heads of their respective organisations-this could be looked as an abuse of privilege.”

Apparently someone really has it in for the new San Pedro Animal Hospital.  Laurie the Vet used to be employed by the local animal charity SAGA.  I would absolutely hate to find that they had anything to do with this.  The Animal Hospital is a great addition to San Pedro and important for future ex-pats like myself.

Also, kudos to Laurie the vet and and Pedro for being on the up-and-up and being able to pass this detestable test by those with evil intentions.

My Friend Chad Hower Wrongly Arrested

A friend of mine Chad Hower, was wrongly arrested in Bulgaria recently.  You may know him as the guy behind the popular Indy and Intraweb components for Delphi.

His situation is a difficult one and I know he’s been dealing with this for a long time.  Recently, his ex-wife escalated the situation by wrongly accusing him of kidnapping his own son.

Read up on his story and if you feel compelled to help out at all, I know he would appreciate it.

Photo Album of the Day

Amazing photos of the Sydney skies this week.  The skies went bright red after a comet dumped Martian like dust through the city. A must read story Feels very Old Testament Biblical to me.

Embezzlement at Planet Hollywood Poker Room

Apparently four employees were stealing from the dealer tournament tips and pocketed fake high hand payouts.

I’d sure like to know who these four people were and if they worked in any other local cardrooms previously.

Video of the Day

Obama is now doing TV commercials for George Lopez???   I just saw this commercial tonight while watching a CSI: NY on TBS.  I could not believe what I was seeing.  Seriously?  A sitting President of the United States is shilling for a third rate commedian on a fourth rate TV network?

This president is turning the presidency into a joke.  It is a disgusting, debasing act and he is continuing the Bush legacy of turning our country into a joke.

When he is ousted from office, fine.  Do as he will.  But as my president… no.

Dude 3:16

Apparently the NIV version of the Bible will be undergoing the first revisions in 25 years to update for changes in English usage and advances in Biblical scholarship.

Coming soon… Dude 3:16 - “For like God… you know… he (or maybe she) like really loved everyone… you know… like everyone in the entire world, you know?”

Disabled Vet takes Congressman Baird to task on his Nazi comments and states the issues very clearly.

Ok Democrats…  Listen….  You could pass this health care plan if you wanted to.  Why haven’t you?  Why the hesitation?  Could it be that you know only a very small percentage of your constituents really want it?  Could it be that signing the bill would be signing your political death warrant?  Conservatives, Moderates, Independents, Libertarians, and even many liberals are fired up to fight this and you will be held accountable.

Belize Government to Assume Control of BTL

Apparently, the #belize house passed a bill today to assume control of BTL, the country’s internet and telephone monopoly.  BTL has been extremely anticompetitive and using their monopoly to the detriment of the progress of Belize and it’s citizens.

I’m not happy that it has to come to this.  I’d prefer to see the government take steps to induce competition.   I sincerely hope that this is a temporary measure until a better course of action can be figured out.

My beloved Delphi is under attack!!!!

As most of you know I am a software developer.  My language of choice is Embarcadero’s (formerly CodeGear’s (formerly Borland’s (formerly Inprise’s (formerly Borland’s)))) Delphi.  Apparently someone has written a virus that infects Delphi RTL source with code that will automatically compile a virus in any executable compiled with that source code. What a unique way to infect a huge number of people with very little work.  Very interesting and scary news.

— update — just talked to Nick Hodges at Embarcadero and he said that virus scanners are picking up on the virus, but it’s not clear if it’s finding only the compiled exe’s or the infected rtl files.  As he points out a scan will find all ProjectXX.exe’s on the system are infected at the very least and that would be a good indication that you’re screwed.

Pepsi Throwback / Mountain Dew Throwback get 8 week trial

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is the devil.  Pepsi is hopping on the anti-HFCS bandwagon by offering a real sugar versions of Pepsi and Mountain Dew.  Soft drinks always taste better in other countries.  Our government apparently likes it that way because they tax the hell out of sugar imports.  In Belize, they use locally grown cane sugar in their soft drinks and they taste better than anything you can get here.

I really wish I wasn’t on a diet right now. Kudos to Pepsi and I hope they continue this long past the 8 week trial.

Wide open hole in American Express merchant services

Quite a while ago I moved all of my credit card processing to Google Checkout from my previous merchant card processor, First Data, but had never canceled my account.  In an effort to tighten the wallet a bit, I decided to rid myself of the $30 bucks a month it was costing me to have an unused merchant account.

Calling FirstData was quick and painless and they canceled my account with few questions asked.  However, as we were finishing up the call, the agent directed me that I must also call American Express to cancel my payment processing with them directly.  I inquired for the phone number and they responded with 800-528-5200 (figure it’s ok to post since they have the number posted in plain site here…)

When calling that provided number, American express greeted me with an automated question asking for an account number.  Since I long ago had lost my login to their site and was on a paperless statement, I couldn’t easily dig up my account number.  No worries because I was offered the option of “I don’t know it”.   Happily I stated in my most robotic voice, “I don’t know it”

The computer responded with “That’s alright, what’s your business phone number?”

I provided my phone number.  The computer then asked me why I was calling, and happily, one of the options was “Close my Account”.  I said, “Close my Account”.

I of course wondered what kind of verification would be next.  Surprisingly, the response was, “Your account has been closed…” followed my a notice that I would receive confirmation in the mail within 10 days (IIRC).

So, apparently, it is possible to cancel any businesses American Express merchant account if you simply know their phone number.  Shocking…
