Quite a while ago I moved all of my credit card processing to Google Checkout from my previous merchant card processor, First Data, but had never canceled my account. In an effort to tighten the wallet a bit, I decided to rid myself of the $30 bucks a month it was costing me to have an unused merchant account.
Calling FirstData was quick and painless and they canceled my account with few questions asked. However, as we were finishing up the call, the agent directed me that I must also call American Express to cancel my payment processing with them directly. I inquired for the phone number and they responded with 800-528-5200 (figure it’s ok to post since they have the number posted in plain site here…)
When calling that provided number, American express greeted me with an automated question asking for an account number. Since I long ago had lost my login to their site and was on a paperless statement, I couldn’t easily dig up my account number. No worries because I was offered the option of “I don’t know it”. Happily I stated in my most robotic voice, “I don’t know it”
The computer responded with “That’s alright, what’s your business phone number?”
I provided my phone number. The computer then asked me why I was calling, and happily, one of the options was “Close my Account”. I said, “Close my Account”.
I of course wondered what kind of verification would be next. Surprisingly, the response was, “Your account has been closed…” followed my a notice that I would receive confirmation in the mail within 10 days (IIRC).
So, apparently, it is possible to cancel any businesses American Express merchant account if you simply know their phone number. Shocking…
